Continuing education

At the business end of product delivery, engineering is a function of service. And so to provide the best possible service to our clients, it is vital that we at EES stay at the leading edge of technological developments in the built environment. In order to do this, we are committed to continually furthering the education and training of all our staff.

Our most recent focus area has been on data centre design and functionality, and to this end four of our staff (including myself) recently completed the EPI-ICOR Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) course.

Taking this a step further, in May this year I went to California to obtain the Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) certification.

We recognize that the heart of any intelligent building is its main distribution area (MDA) commonly referred to as the server room – which is in effect in most cases a small data centre. And with purpose-built data centres becoming more prevalent in the built environment, up-skilling ourselves in this domain became a priority.

For our client Alexander Forbes, who provide financial and risk services internationally, their data centre has been designed and built with tier 3 Uptime guidelines in mind, incorporating TIA 942 technical standards (see EES project manages intelligent infrastructure for new Alexander Forbes head office).

And Cape Town Stadium’s data centres would achieve tier 3 Uptime standard (if certified) with the building facilities in place to support the potential to achieve tier 4 level – the highest Uptime operational sustainability standard. For more on stadia see Brasil World Cup 2014.

Speaking of exports, while in California I was a guest at a Sonoma wine-tasting weekend, and our SA wine makers are making some exceptional American wines (just as our Olympians have done us proud in London)!
