Ridgeside Development, Durban

Client: Tongaat Hulett Developments
Contact : Lawrence Kirkman
Contract period : 2007 to ongoing
Scope of work: Located in Umhlanga Rocks on the north coast of Durban in KwaZulu- Natal, adjacent to Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre South Africa, Ridgeside is a four-phased development that will effectively link the Umhlanga Ridge to the Umhlanga Rocks village. The site consists of 140ha of land nestled within a rough triangle created by Umhlanga Rocks Drive and two major highways, the M4 and the M41.

The developer decided that after the success of the Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre that this multi use development would benefit from a CCTV surveillance solution. A purpose built control centre was built to house the control room, equipment and staff.

The first 14 cameras of a final 40 cameras have been installed and the system has been operational since 2013. The control room manages alarms and general access control into secured areas as well as the CCTV surveillance. This has resulted in the operators being aware of all activities in the area which adds the intelligence necessary to optimise the use of the CCTV.
Project Project involvement value: approx. ZAR 6 million anticipated

Cornubia Retail Park, Durban

Client: Tongaat Hulett Developments
Contact : Sithembiso Mthembu
Contract period : 2013 - 2018
Scope of work: The multi-billion Rand Cornubia integrated human settlement, a Cabinet-endorsed priority project and the first of its kind in KwaZulu- Natal, is a collaboration between eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett Developments.

Cornubia is a mixed-use phased development project that is strategically located between Phoenix/Ottawa and Umhlanga, bordered by the N2 freeway, M41 arterial and the Ohlanga River. The development comprises a total of 1 200ha, of which 450h is unusable land and 750ha is developable land consisting of 25 000 residential units (15 000 are low income), 70ha of industrial platforms, 50ha of mixed-use developments and 1 200 000m2 of commercial bulk including offices, retail and so forth. The Cornubia project will be developed over several phases spanning about 20 years.

The retail portion of the development has the benefit of a large shopping centre development that is due to start construction late in 2015. This has prompted the necessity to address the long term success of the security in the area.

It has been decided to proceed with a well-designed CCTV surveillance solution. The design will be completed by the last quarter of 2015, installation proceeding shortly thereafter.

The system will eventually be used as a public space management tool, bringing a quality to the area that helps maintain property values.
Project Project involvement value: approx. ZAR 3 million
